在文章中，會使用轉折詞來承接前後文的語意，有新增資訊、轉折、對比、類比、因果、舉例、呈現事實、換句話說以及總結等功能，而轉折詞通常為副詞和片語。

 

常見的轉折詞如下：

新增資訊

besides, also, in addition, additionally, moreover, what’s more, furthermore (此外)

轉折

however(然而;但是), though, nevertheless(儘管如此), nonetheless(儘管如此), notwithstanding (雖然)

對比

in contrast(相反的), on the contrary, by contrast, instead, on the other hand (從另一方面…)

類比

similarly, likewise(相同地)

因果

thus, therefore, hence, consequently, as a result, as a consequence, accordingly(因此)

舉例

for example, for instance,take N for example, to name a few( 舉幾個例子)

呈現事實

in fact, in reality, actually,as a matter of fact (實際上)

換句話說

namely(亦;也就是), in other words(換句話說), that is,

總結

to sum up, in conclusion, in short, by and large, in summary, all in all, in the long run( 從長遠來看) ,in a word( 總之)

新增資訊用於：在講完某件事情後，尚有補充資訊或支持前面提到的論述，亦可用於強調其重要性。

 

Drunk driving is dangerous. Moreover, it’s illegal.

(酒駕是危險的，此外，酒駕違法。)

轉折：前後語意相互矛盾或相反的句子。

Notwithstanding he studied hard, he failed in English.

(儘管很努力，他英文考試還是沒及格。)

對比：(on the contrary)用來表示與先前的看法相反或極不相同，或表示前面的看法不正確，現在說的才是真的。用來表示兩件人事物的不同之處。

Everyone thinks Ella is a good student. On the contrary, she is a bully.

(大家都認為Ella是位好學生，相反地，她是位惡霸。)

類比：前後兩件人事物對照相同之處。

The food here tastes terrible; likewise, the service is awful.

(這裡的食物很難吃，同樣地，服務很糟糕。)

舉例：為前面的論述，解釋說明用。

The early bird gets the worm. For example, if you book the tickets early, you can get a discount.

 

(早起的鳥兒有蟲吃，舉例來說，如果你早點訂票，你可以獲得優惠。)

呈現事實:

actually 用在不完全同意對方的說法，或對前面講的內容做修正。

「Actually」可以用來談論真實的事情、糾正或反駁他人、強調事物的不同，或令人驚訝的意外之處、承認或坦白錯誤。

I can’t agree with you. Actually, I think the ideal is so bad.

(我無法同意你，事實上我認為那個想法很糟糕)

Actually, I ate all the cake. (事實上，我把蛋糕都吃了。)

in fact 用於補充先前說的內容，或舉出例證強調。

John likes sports a lot. In fact, he is on the school baseball team.

(John 很喜歡運動，事實上他在學校棒球隊。)

換句話說：以直白的話語再將前面所說過的內容再解釋一次。

 

He doesn’t tell the truth. In other words, he is lying.

(他沒有說實話，換句話說，他在說謊。)

總結:在提出許多例子支持論點後，在最後結尾時，再將重要的論點做結論。

In conclusion, Learning English is important for us.

(結論，學習英文對我們來說很重要。)
