while (during the time)

定義：while當從屬連接詞時，表「在……的時後；與……同時」，用於連接兩個「發生時間接近」或「同時」的子句；一個為主要子句（含主詞與動詞），另一個由while引導的從屬子句（含主詞與動詞）。

 

當連接的兩個子句中的動詞都是「持續性動詞」時；持續性動詞是指該動詞的動作會「延續、持續做一段時間」，通常以「進行式」呈現。

（一）while置於句首：句中有逗號

While＋過去進行式,

（長時間→持續性動詞）

過去簡單式（短時間→瞬間動詞）.

過去進行式（長時間→持續性動詞）.

While Tony’s mother was watching TV in the living room,

he woke up（醒來）.

While I was doing the laundry,

 my husband was cleaning the house.

當Tony的媽媽在客廳看電視時，他醒來。

 

當我在洗衣服時，我老公在清理房子。

while置於句中：while的前面不加逗號

過去簡單式（短時間→瞬間動詞）過去進行式（長時間→持續性動詞）

while＋過去進行式.（長時間）

Tom woke up（醒來）

while his mom was watching TV in the living room.

My husband was cleaning the house

while I was doing the laundry

While文法練習:

1.當我在房間讀書時，我的朋友很大聲的在客廳說話。

My friends were speaking loudly in the living room while I was studying in my room.

While I was studying in my room, my friends were speaking loudly in the living room

2.當她的弟弟在裡面跳舞時，瑪莉在外面唱歌。

Mary was singing outside while her brother was dancing inside.

While Mary’s brother was dancing inside, she was singing outside.

3.當他在廚房煮飯，他女兒打電話給他。

While he was cooking in the kitchen, his daughter called him.

His daughter called him while he was cooking in the kitchen. 

While 置於句首有「儘管....雖然....」的意思，約等同於Although/ Though

 

While Jenny has gone to Japan for 5 years, she still can't speak Japanese well.

雖然Jenny 在日本已經長達五年，但是她仍然無法把日文說好。

While 亦可表達「而...然而....但是...」的意思，約等同於but whereas，可置於句首與句中

Jenny has two son. One of her son is tall while the other is short.

when(at the time)使用時機：

當連接的兩個子句中的動詞都是「瞬間動詞」時。瞬間動詞是指馬上、立刻就會完成的動詞，通常使用「簡單式」呈現。 

When＋過去簡單式,（瞬間動詞）

過去簡單式.(瞬間動詞)

When I got home,

I took off my shoes

當我回家，我脫掉鞋子。

When I called you, you woke up. 當我打電話給妳時，你醒來。

表示在「一段期間當中」，例如：「在...歲時、在...時期」。

When I was in junior high school, I used to go to the library every weekend.

我國中生的時候，我每個周末都會去圖書館。

When文法練習：

當我小的時候我住在台北。

When I was child, I lived in Taipei.

I lived in Taipei when I was child.

當Cindy 20歲時，她考取駕照。

When Cindy was 20, she got a driver’s license.

Cindy got a driver’s license when she was 20.

當Judy在休假時，她感冒了。

When Judy was on a vacation, she got a cold.

Judy got a cold when she was on a vacation.

3.兩個動作的發生「有先後順序」時，使用when。

I met my friends when I arrived at the airport .

當我到達機場後，我遇到我的朋友。
