What we do on Chinese New Year 我們在新年時做哪些事請?

Before New Year (新年之前)

1.  Spring Cleaning/ clean the house 春節大掃除

除舊佈新（Drive out the old and bring in the new.）

掃除厄運（sweep away ill fortune） 

2. special purchases for the Spring Festival ; do Spring Festival shopping 買年貨

 

3. Stick up/ put up spring couplets貼春聯      

對句（couplets）的內容皆是好運（good fortune）、快樂（happiness）、長壽（longevity）、財富（wealth）等吉祥話，祈求各種好運（wish for good fortune）。

4.offer sacrifices to ancestors / pay tributes to ancestors 祭拜祖先

5. Enjoy the reunion dinner / family reunion dinner吃團圓飯

年夜飯 the dinner on New Year's Eve

團圓飯（reunion dinner）

每道菜(every)都有其象徵的意義（symbolic meaning）,像是魚(fish)和餘（surplus）同音，「年年有魚（餘）」就是年年有盈餘的意思。（May you always have more than you need!）。

餃子 Jiao-zi; Chinese meat ravioli ; dumplings

symbolic meaning is making a fortune 發財

蘿蔔糕turnip cake; radish cake

symbolic meaning is promoting to a higher position步步高升

長年菜 Mustard greens

symbolic meaning is for longevity; the associated phrase is chang chang jiu jiu, which means "long life 長壽

6.give / receive red envelopes 發紅包 / 領紅包亦可說lucky money

7.stay up late 守歲

意味著能幫家中的長輩添壽。

8. Setting off firecrackers and fireworks 放鞭炮/煙火

 

On New Year 過年當天

1 pay New Year's call; give New Year's greetings; New Year's visit.拜年

 What we don’t do on Chinese New Year. 過年我們不做什麼？

There are some taboos during the Chinese New Year. 春年期間有一些禁忌。

1.Do not break tools or other equipment 不要打破工具或器具

2.Do not use the brooms and do not sweeping out the trash

       不要使用掃帚，也不要將垃圾往外掃

 3.No lending and borrowing money

 4.No crying and quarreling 不要哭泣或爭吵
